Job Summary

The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) develops and implements anesthesia care plans, providing a full scope of anesthesia services as defined by clinical privileges. As part of InSite Digestive Health Care, the CRNA will practice both autonomously and in collaboration with a variety of health providers on interdisciplinary care teams to deliver high-quality, holistic, evidence-based anesthesia and pain care services. The CRNA cares for patients at all acuity levels across the lifespan for procedures including, but not limited to diagnostic, therapeutic, and pain management.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Perform and document the pre-anesthesia assessment and evaluation of the patient.
  • Review laboratory and diagnostic studies.
  • Obtain and document informed consent for anesthesia and related services.
  • Select, obtain, order, and administer pre-procedural medication and adjuvant treatments.
  • Determine, prepare, and apply non-invasive monitors, supplies, and drugs for the administration of sedation, anesthesia, and pain management services; perform safety checks as needed.
  • Select, order, obtain, and administer analgesic and anesthetic agents, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, fluids, or blood products necessary to provide anesthesia services.
  • Perform all aspects of airway management, including emergency management and securement.
  • Facilitate emergence and recovery from anesthesia by evaluating patient response, and selecting, ordering, and administering medications, fluids, and ventilatory support to maintain patient stability during transfer.
  • Initiate and administer post-anesthesia pharmacological or fluid support of the cardiovascular system.
  • Initiate and administer respiratory support to ensure adequate ventilation and oxygenation in the post-anesthesia period.
  • Evaluate the patients response to anesthesia and procedures performed; initiate appropriate corrective action throughout the post-anesthesia period.
  • Provide post-anesthesia follow-up evaluation and care.
  • Discharge the patient from the post-anesthesia care unit according to facility criteria and protocols.
  • Implement appropriate pain management modalities.
  • Manage emergency situations by assessing, stabilizing, and determining disposition of patients, including providing airway management, administration of emergency drugs and fluids, and instituting basic and advanced cardiac life support techniques and adjuvant therapeutic agents.
  • Provide patient and caregiver education.
  • Perform venous puncture to obtain appropriate blood specimens when indicated.
  • Use an interdisciplinary approach, including consultation or referral to the physician of record and any colleague clinicians, as appropriate.
  • Increased clinical responsibilities may be added as additional education and experience is obtained by the individual practitioner.

Quality Assurance & Patient Safety:

Support patient safety and wellbeing when performing job functions and through participation in facility, department or unit patient safety initiatives. Quality Assurance and Patient Safety responsibilities of the CRNA may include, but are not limited to:

  • Deliver didactic and clinical education to staff.
  • Participate in facility committees and related activities.
  • Act as interdepartmental liaison.
  • Initiate appropriate action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
  • Report adverse events and any near miss situations to appropriate management authority and the Site Lead CRNA.
  • Identify possible risks in processes, procedures, and devices; and communicates to those in charge.
  • Maintain confidential records and comply with HIPAA requirements to protect PHI.
  • Implement and adhere to InSite and affiliated facilities policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Licensed as a current and active Registered Nurse in the state of California, complying with all applicable state statutory and regulatory requirements concerning CRNAs.
  • Graduate of a nurse anesthesia educational program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs or its predecessor.
  • Certified or Recertified by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
  • Insurable by a medical malpractice insurer for the limits required by the State of California and InSite Digestive Health Care.
